"Pay what you want" Arduino experiment
07.03.2007 at 20:59:37

Hi

How much is an Arduino worth?.

I have five new Atmega168's with matching 16Mhz crystals.

I'll mail them individually Monday to the first five people who send me a shipping address (in North/South America only please).  Don't send any money until you receive it. (Edit: I can ship anywhere except antarctica... it might be slow, but you'll get it eventually)

Once you receive the Arduino chip, you can send me whatever you think it's worth: you choose how much to pay.
I'll send my paypal via email. For reference, the Atmega168 with crystal, tax and shipping to you will cost me about $10 CAD or ($ 8.50USD). But hey-- pay what you want!

Send your mailing address here: ( terminalcity <at> gmail dot com).

I got this idea from a 'trust' network called Phranc, that distributed hundreds of thousands of Garmin GPS  connectors that a guy made in his back yard... and they based every one of the hundreds of thousands of transactions on trust and a 'pledge'.

Daniel

PS: I am only sending out five of these, and then that's it! Not looking to go into business, just interested in the experiment, and seeing if a trust network could be applied to the Arduino...

Dan,

keep me posted about the results of this experiment ... it seems very very interesting. I am looking forward to see how much is the emotional value of this right now.

Long life the trust,

/David

Hi

here are the results of the "pay what you want" Arduino Experiment...

I shipped 6 Atmega168's burned with bootlader and a new crystals to five people, all over the place: Australia, USA, England, Germany and South America.

Total cost for all chips and shipments was about $65 CAD...

So far I have received payments totaling about $77 CAD. Some people pay exactly what it cost to burn and ship, while others sent something for my time.

There is one person who made a specific request to get two chips, which I mailed, but they did not pay anything and have since disappeared.

So all in all, it was a break-even process, but not something I would do again, as it takes some time to do it all, and to remind people to pay (there is actually a lot of this, even if it is to remind people to pay "what they want"), and then of course we have people who don't pay at all.

It seems like the conclusion to this is that  the commercial model is the best way to distribute Arduino: pay up front, and then get your chips Smiley

Respect!

I really appreciate your initiative.
Is it “cheating” if I pay for some of your time?

Ah, it's ok!
I think perhaps the way to do this kind of experiment is to make people pay first, then there is no running around to ask people to pay. The Phranc network for Garmin plugs does hit: you pledge to pay, and then the plugs get sent to you. Anyway as ann experiemnt it was more than ok!

Hej,

I like this experiment, but you have to make it in a bit more massive way. I am thinking in taking over your initiative and design a circuit to send to people, letting them pay whatever they consider it is worth. I am in Korea right now and I think that I can get access to a nice production place where to make something special like a multiple inputs board.

How much would people pay to increase the amount of inputs to 64? Don't you wonder?

Let's see what happens

Hej kompis!

Nice idea to try this out in a massive way.
I was also thinking. Doesn't Arduino allready have like 2^11 inputs? Or were you thinkin about the analog inputs?
I am interested, thought I got my board only two days ago and am still trying to find out how to make it do what I want.
