How does modular learning boost innovation & creativity in the classroom?

We imagine that most educators reading this article believe that STEM learning should be fun and engaging. Children (and indeed, anyone) learn better when lessons are exciting, when they get hands-on, and when working together.

That’s why it’s important to construct creative STEM lessons that empower students to be innovative and push boundaries. Modular learning comes into that mix and contributes to making STEM fun.

What is modular learning?

Modular learning means studying one ‘module’ of a course or program at a time. It offers the flexibility to pick and choose which module to work on, and when. It’s often easier for students to learn when their course is broken down into bite-size chunks.

This versatility means that educators can construct a course or program in a way that makes sense for their students, or even have different students working on different modules.

Why is modular learning important?

Modular learning offers a variety of benefits. Students are more likely to retain the information they learn, because they don’t need to remember a lot of things all at the same time. Additionally, modular learning:

  • Boosts innovation and creativity by allowing students to get deep into one area
  • Allows educators to choose what section of the curriculum or course to focus on
  • Expands on existing knowledge
  • Has no set limits, so learning can go deeper and wider into one topic
  • Encourages 21st century skills like collaboration and problem-solving

What is the learning impact of modular learning?

As we’ve just mentioned, modular learning is a great way to engage your students and allow them to go deeper into the subject matter. This, in turn, helps them retain what they learn more easily.

It’s also easier to build on existing knowledge when learning is broken down into modules. Just like building a wall, you can start with a strong foundation and add a brick at a time until the wall is complete.

Modular learning with Arduino Education

CTC GO! is a modular learning program from Arduino Education.

Designed for high school, it’s a getting-started program that teaches students how to use electronics and gives them an introduction to programming and coding.

The lessons increase in difficulty, from the very basics all the way through to learning different programming capabilities and building circuits for different sensors and actuators. This is where modular learning comes in.

There are eight lessons, eight guided projects, and six self-guided projects. During the six guided projects, students practice building structures and applying the knowledge acquired in the lessons.
